The Plainburg was the master castle of the Counts of Plain. The first traces of human settlement on today's castle site stem from the late Bronze Age. Several documents of 15th up to 18th centuries confirm maintenance work done to the castle, which could not prevent it to fall into ruin since the beginning of the 19th century.
